    X4 is biased.

Unbiased would be (in Kerkythea) the MLT and PTP settings.

I believe the TR1 and TR2 settings in Thea are unbiased...

I noticed you have a "GTX580" video card-nice. Everyone else, unless you have one, don't expect the rendering times she is getting. Good job.

Pat, you can control the intensity of the sun beam in the ray trace dialog. See attached

    Pat,

I'm glad to see you digging in. I haven't had time. Haven't even been in Thea in a month. I'm thinking they've come far enough that I'll be able to do a mix. My quick shots I'll do in Chief - skip the time it takes to export, translate and import into Thea. For my bigger and more advance ones - not sure yet, probably some of each. The bigger and more sophisticated the image needs to be, the more worth it is to export.

A quick glance at the Thea page makes no mention of hardware acceleration. The Chief ray tracer is not hardware accelerated either. That said, the video card will have no performance benefit to a ray trace. Increase your number of cores and cache sizes instead.

    Susan,

She's talking about softness, not brightness - I believe. I haven't been in Thea in awhile, but I believe it has a separate Softness setting for the sun, like we have Soft Shadows for lights.

Uh Oh, I feel a Feature Request coming on!

Looks nice Pat! Just curious - is that bust a 3d object or an image? I like the sofa fabric too.

I have a 6 core machine. It does make a difference.

    Very nice Pat!
good timing on your new machine.

Now I have to talk my wife into letting me put x3 on her new tower. Same specs as you except for 24g ram. I put it together for her recently for video editing. My first build, was a little nervous at first! What kind of cpu cooler did you opt for?

I bought Cool-It Freezone Elite but it didn't fit my tower so I have to send it back. The guy who built my machine said he ran a bunch of tests and pushed it's limits and said that the machine runs pretty cool without it.

Glad you are up and running with your new machine Pat! Nice renders! As far as trying that scene in X3 as somebody suggested, you would not have gotten anywhere close. X4 is a huge improvement.
