OK, so here's the deal.
Select each cabinet individually and open its Component dbx. Uncheck the "use" box for each sub-category that you don't want to show in the materials list. Multi-select will not work for this, you must select each cabinet separately.
When the material list is created, the items "unchecked" will not be included.
IMO, the fact that multi-select doesn't work is a bug - which I will report.

One other note:
If you modify the Components dbx for a cabinet and then copy that cabinet the Component settings will be copied as well. Some modifications can be done to a cabinet without having any effect on those settings - but changing the size will "break the copy" and you would then have to make those changes in that cabinet's Component dbx.
If you store such a cabinet in the library the Component Settings are retained - this could be a fairly easy solution for some instances of using the materials list in this manner.Last edited by Joe Carrick; 08-30-2011 at 08:20 AM.

It appears that any change to a cabinet which results in a change to the size or quantity of any component of a cabinet will result in a new version of the Component List with all "use" boxes checked. So, if you change the size of a cabinet or the size of any of the front elements, etc you will get a new Component List for that cabinet.
