Ruby should be available in the trial version

but the trial version can't do saves so that might be an issue ???

you may want to contact customer service tomorrow

yes the text macros have a purpose and can be useful

I have not bothered with Ruby - lack of need - lack of interest

I'm hoping that some future release has a full implementation of Ruby and full exposure to Chief's API

until then I will probably not mess with Ruby much

I can't see climbing the learning curve only to go one stop on the bus ride

    Ruby

    Hi Lew,

Seems a reboot was needed to get Ruby running.

I've been on the "When will there be an API ?" begging list since I worked on the 9.5 Beta, back in 2003.

Revit has a good API which I drive with Visual Basic .Net. However, to provide such a macro interface requires sub-licensing from Microsoft (besides all the code changes), so how many Chief users wish to pay for that? Revit is much costlier than Chief.

Ruby is a runtime scripting engine, which the developers claim is an object orientated programming language akin to SmallTalk... yeh... right... looks more like PERL / C Script to me... cheap and simple... a long way short of an API. Worth a look anyway.

Since I have rarely used CA X2 since upgrading 2 years ago, I'm wondering what has changed in X3 and whether it's worth getting back in the loop; assuming I can get some income out of using Chief again. The GFC stopped a lot of commercial and private housing work in Australia over the past three years. Government "stimulus" packages such as schools helped a bit... but those jobs needed AutoCAD or Revit in govt registered practices.

    Cheers,
    Ian
