Oh, I already made that suggestion (Boolean Operations on Symbols, not just Solids)

Boy, do I feel foolish, well I tried to figure out how to do a 3/4 column per the Ric Howe definition. Here are a couple more videos showing how this might be accomplished.

SketchUp -
Using SketchUp - you can do this very easily.
No problem at all. Use SketchUp, and here is one of their videos that show you how the method is done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax9HY06PB8M

Here are some 3ds models. Full, Half and corner. They are based on an 8" diameter column. The style is from a company called Pacific Columns.
I made the top, bottom and columns separate so you can adjust to what height you need.poelcat

I just tried using Scott's method with stretch zones with the fluted doric column from the library.
I placed two of them in a plan, set the y stretch to 0 and -7.5, set the x stretch to 0 and 7.5 and checked the "Stretch zones" boxes.
Then I adjusted one of the them so that it was 7.5" in the y dimension and the other so that it was 7.5" in both x and y.
That gave me a 1/2 column and a 1/4 column. I rotated the 1/4 column 90 degrees and positioned it so that the two formed the 3/4 column.
Then I created a symbol of the result and stored it in the library as a 3/4 column. The resulting 2D CAD block is as expected and the origin is at the center bottom - perfect!Last edited by Joe Carrick; 01-17-2011 at 03:49 PM.

One of the things that this demonstrated is that as long as the 3D image is different from the original symbol in any way is that a new symbol can be created from that within Chief.

Joe and Scott: If you will, please collaborate on a video to show how this half-column and three-quarters-column are produced, using the Chief library symbol, stretch-zoning, and resizing. I'm not getting it.
Thanks.Gene Davis

Gene, you ask and you will receive, here is a video that explains the process, if you have further questions give me a call.
oops, here it is...
http://www.chieftutor.com/scotthall4/col2.html
You should probably start with part 1, that explains the stretch zones better. But I must say that JC improve on the method (I believe), because he used a half column and a quarter column in lieu of (2) half columns like I suggested. What this does is eliminates one of the vertical lines that would appear in vector view, I discussed the vertical lines (the seam beteen the two columns ) in part 2 of video.Last edited by dshall; 01-19-2011 at 06:05 AM.

Boolean operations are like Chief's "Solid Addition", "Solid Subtraction" and "Solid Intersection". I thought that SU had those but I don't use SU unless I have to simply because I don't like the process of then getting the symbol into Chief.
