You're absolutely correct. You could use a custom countertop, slab, polyline solid etc.. To me basically they're all the same BUT have certain properties already assigned and for many situations, you could either one of them for the same thing.

Slabs do not get any information from cabinets. In fact they don't interact with cabinets in any way at all. Slabs will not turn off the automatic counter top when they are moved on top of a base cabinet. Slabs do not get their height and thickness set from cabinets. slabs can't have back splashes. Slabs will not get an automatic hole for a sink. Slabs can't have edge moldings attached to them. Counter tops are actually pretty special compared to slabs.

If you want a counter top, then you should use a counter top, not a slab.

All I was implying is that you can use a slab and make it be used as a countertop on a cabinet just like you can a solid. I think I did mention that countertops (and for that matter slabs) have certain features (properties) that come with them. I can put a slab on a cabinet, cut a hole and add molding to it, and place fixtures on it. Would a custom countertop be faster and my first choice? Yes.
