Lew;
Windows in the past has not seemed to work good updating an exsting computer. Do you know if 7 is good to use as an update. I have an HP 1 year old laptop with Vista.
Thanks

James:
I try to avoid upgrading an OS and prefer to buy a PC with the new OS
However, from what I hear Win 7 is really Vista Part 2 so I think the upgrade "should" go smoothly.
I just bought two Vista PC's in 2008 so I will skip Win7 unless I find a "need" for it, but if I do I will upgrade
backups are always a good idea before upgrading

James,
Although you can upgrade Vista to 7. It isn't recommended by most people. A clean install is best and if you are going from 32 to 64 bit is really is a must.
FYI - Vista is Win NT 6.0, Win 7 is Win NT 7.0, there are significant differences between these two releases. Unlike W2k (NT5.0) and XP (NT5.1)Karl Koning, Registered Architect - WA, CPBD

Karl:
I thought it was XP to Win 7 that required the clean install ???

clean install is probably needed for 32-bit to 64-bit
I have Vista 64-bit so I forgot about those with 32-bit
If I ever need Win 7 I'll research this more

MacBook Pro Questions
My PC motherboard just fried itself and I'm getting a lot of pressure to go Mac from the Graphic side or our office. I'm going to have to get something to keep working pretty quickly here.
Who's running Chief X3premier an an iMac or MacBook? and what is your Mac cofiguration?
Is it as sharp and fast as a new PC with an i7?
Are my current Chief files fully readable in a Chief/Bootcamp installation?John Britton AIA/CEA,CEPE

Karl;
I have a high end HP laptop. Can you whip a laptop and load Windows 7?

Not sure if 'whipping' will help but you can try. We did a format and install of windows 7 on a 6 year old hp laptop last night. Got everything working and it's a lot snappier than it was using Windows XP.
The wireless was not working but we got it on the network and windows updates found the right driver. Now everything appears to be working well.Dan Park,

Dan
Did windows 7 have everything that laptop needed to run like vidio cards and battery power, DVD player and so on?
Did the windows 7 have a "formate and load" selection? or was the formate something you did before loading 7?

Not everything was on the disk but as soon as we hooked it up to the internet it found most of the drivers we needed automatically. I was a bit surprised in this case considering the hardware.
So far I have had good luck with Windows 7 on older systems. These same systems would not run Vista yet windows 7 works as good or better than Windows XP.Dan Park,
