Different electrical layers
So I am trying to create a lighting plan, and then a separate electrical/plugs and mechanical plan.
I created a lighting plan and then created a new eletrical/mechanical layer for the latter, but when I go to add plugs onto the new layer all of the lighting clicks on automatically. If I un-check it, it still turns everything on when I click anything electrical clouding up my plug/mechanical plan with all of the lighting.
Any tips on how I can do two separate layers for electrical?Chief: Version X4 on Windows7

open each object's dbx and set the layer as needed
you might be able to use "select same" and "load same" tools ???

I think there have been suggestions to be able to control the default layer for electrical, among other things. I agree this would be a nice feature, especially for commerical TI work. Don't know any other workarounds other than what Lew is already suggesting.

Rooster,
In version 10 the way to work if you are using many other layers for things is to not put anything on the default layer, then you will not have the issue you are having.

If I remember right from version 10, that used to be a big pain.
Have framing turned off and just selecting a framing tool would turn that layer on.

Not sure if this will work.
Place a plug and put it on another layer, then copy/paste that plug rather than using the plug tool..........

In version 10 you also have the layer painter tool to help you change the layer of things.

I've started creating new layers for each item such as having a plugs layer and a separate lighting layer and it is much easier to control.
So when I want all of the plugs on one layer, recessed lighting on another, and sconces on a different one how do I go about setting them up on their own layer by default rather than opening each item up and changing it's layer assignment? How do I include the whole group on to a different layer than it's default? And can this be done retrospectively such as moving all of the recessed lighting on to its own layer after the fact?

Try Tools/Layer Painter. Then just pick your layer, and click on each item you want on that layer. Should be pretty quick?
