You do not have to waste the attic space with trusses. Look up "Attic Trusses" in you help files. We call them "Storage Trusses" sometimes.

But in this situation I don't think an attic truss set up would be worth it based on his drawing (the roof pitches, etc.). If maximum attic space was desired, traditional framing would be ideal in this situation.

Also, if the HVAC unit is going to be in the attic then it will more than likely need an area of "attic trusses" anyway for the unit and service area, usually about 4'x10'x4'.

Obviously there are two schools of thought here and both are valid options you just need to decide which works best for you.

    Traditional Framing
    Pros:
    1. Maximum attic storage.
    2. Ease of servicing HVAC, Eletrical, cable, etc. in Attic once the house is built due to not having to crawl through trusses to get to location.
    3. Build in the field and can adjust to real time situations.

    Cons:
    1. Longer to install
    2. Point loads in interior.

    Trusses
    Pros:
    1. Easy/fast to install
    2. Stronger framing
    3. all load on exterior walls

    Cons:
    1. Not ideal for complicated roof designs
    2. Does not maximize attic space.
    3. Hard to navigate "attic" area to service HVAC, electrical, cable
    4. May end up using more lumber in a truss assembly than traditional framing.
    5. If wall framers screw up a measurement... well... have fun.
