You may have set a wall surface material in the wall specification dialog or you may have set a room material in the room specification dialog (or done this accidently using the material painter). In either case, these materials will override the material that was set in the wall layers.

To fix this, you can open both the wall and room dialogs and make sure the wall surface materials are set to "use default".

There is also a remote possibility that you have specified a full height wall covering (in either the room or for the walls) but this is pretty hard to do by accident.

    Might be the room material..
Check what the material is with the rainbow tool.

I would not be afraid to paint the walls in this case..

Posting the plan would be a better idea..
