I made this as a view to CAD and then drew dimensions and labels.
It would be nice when sitting with a client and they ask: "How tall/wide is that?" and I'd take a cross section and drag a ruler, no different than if we were standing in a kitchen or bath and they asked the same question, there.

In a cross-section view, it's all lines, so why not be able to dimension to any of them: Some people like generalities, such as "How many square feet of carpeting will I be needing?" to quite detailed and specific: "What size crown molding should I put on my upper cabinets so it meets this window trim over the sink?"

Does your ruler tool generate a permanent dimension? Or does it simply provide feedback and then disappear?

    Thanks for providing feedback!

If I can see a line I should be able to dimension to it.

That is the inevitable goal. It's a long road to get there, unfortunately. The primary goal of gathering more information is to figure out what is highest on the priority list for dimensioning. Floor and ceiling heights versus pattern lines on your brick wall. What must you provide dimensions for in order to get permits? To build the structure?

Depends on the Job Sarah, and the information any particular job may require. As I stated in another post , any horizontal line should be dimensionalbe, including window & door parts, stairs, landings. Etc.etc.
I may need to dimension what someone else doesn't and visa-versa.
This new tool may include a filtering option.

We will definitely make filtering options available as more objects become dimensionable in 3D views.

With regards to window & door parts, what parts in particular do you need to dimension? All parts (right down to the width of the lites in the glass panels)? Or is it a more general width/height to casing, width/height to rough opening sort of deal?

I put most of my dimensions on a cross section.

What do you dimension in the cross section?

What do you define as "standard" dims?

    Sarah:

The types of dims that are being posted via pics in this thread

At a minimum, the floor heights and eve heights and ridge heights
    roof pitches

Cabinet dimensioning would be enhanced by having a single toggle that would set dimension values, usually smaller, as predetermined by the user. The same toggle would reinstate "floor plan" defaults as desired.

A tool that would allow you to swap out your default settings?

I have a question: do you like dynamic defaults? Or would you prefer that your dimension never changes once it's drawn?

    Sarah,
Anything that is user "defineable" in the z-axis in Chief should be "dimensionable" in elevations/sections. Chief has the info, ..........
    Is that too general?

    Hi

This may or may not be relevant to your enquiry but I’ll through it out there anyway.
After generating an exterior elevation it would be most helpful to be able to show only the terrain lines that come in contact with the foundation (model?)

Then be able to place “special use” markers on objects that will auto display elevations with regard to the first floor elv. 0.00’

I send just about all elevations and cross sections to cad detail so for me it would be important that all the above mentioned transfer there as well as the model view. I realize the loss of the link between the view and the model but the above would still be a great time saver.

And while your at it,,, when the model is sent to cad detail have all the elements contain in that view to remain on their assigned layers,,, not just the two layers we have now.

And another thought,,, wall sections,,, have these proposed “smart elv. Markers” work for top of all walls,,, framing members,, foundation walls,,, footings,,, top and mid points of pony walls,,, retaining walls,,, joist,,, headers,,, decks,,, base line for sure,,,,

    you asked! ,,,Ray
