Trim between porch posts
Can someone point me in the right direction - where/how do I get trim at the tops of my porch posts, like in the attached picture

I would cheat - use a railing and convert to a symbol.
1 - Make a porch railing that's the right size etc - even if it's upside down.
2 - Get a 3D view on screen that shows nothing except the railing.
3 - Tools - Symbols - I can't remember exactly, Convert or something pretty obvious. Follow the directions.
4 - If you need to turn it upside down, I think you need to use "advanced" - there's a 3D picture that let's you see what you will get on the other end.
In the symbol - you can name it, put it in your library, determine where you can stretch it. I haven't watched the videos yet, but either those or some trial and error (which is why I did) will get you to a good result.Wendy Lee Welton

I wrote code in 1984 to make my Sinclair 100 - so I used to be a programmer! So I can say with authority how easy it is to program Chief features! ;-)

Ken you can also do it with polyline solids and then in elevation view save to lib and put in plans I just created one in about 10 min. saved to my lib if I can figure out how to find it and upload it i will post it

Sometimes you have to resort to polyline solids.
Draw "build" what Chief is designed to do (walls, raillings, roof planes, etc.)
Then, for the specific details of your particular project, draw in the details much as you would actually be building it:
1. Top 2x2 rail
2. Upright 2x2 posts
3. Bottom rail.
I drew them in cross section view (which put them at a place relevant to how I dragged the camera.)
I would have to move them into place in plan view (which I have not done, yet.)
This is where some folk on this ChiefTalk site get very creative with making polylines, or cad lines and converting them to some molding, either one in chief or a profile they drew.
Then there is always the export/import symbol thing.

I thought we had some thing like that in the library.
By the time X3 is out I'll know where to look in the X2 library...........

An option I was working on in X2 is giving me problems. But, the idea is to put in 2 or 3 windows, fixed, no casing or sill, narrow sash, vertical lights to suit and drag up the wall. IF the windows are butt together or against a post you will not see a wall. Install brackets and posts as needed. You will need to creat an invisible material for the glass so you don't get the default obscure glass treatment.

Slab Tool
This would be so simple to do with slabs - especially since you are working with generally square elements. Also, slabs tend to be more stable and don't move around like library millwork elements or windows do every time your floor height changes.

Thanks to all for your help - this forum is great
Wendy, love your idea - going to see if can get that to work
Ray, email address is on the way, thanks for your offer, polyline solids or slabs seem to the most practical way to get a quick result
Allan, I have had a pretty good search of the libraries but didn't find anything that I could make work - maybe X3?
I experimented a bit with windows but couldn't get them to work either
I'm going to have another look at Sams, thanks Dean
Cheers

This was made with polylines.

I made mine for this house using slabs. I made a library with different lengths and had to make some in a curve for where the porch curved.
