Cannot change materials....need help.

Ok guys I am running the lastest updated version of X1, and recently no matter what mode I am in I CANNOT change the material of anything. Camera view, plan view, nothing. If I click the spray can in camera view it locks up the computer and makes a BMMMPP noise when I hit a key, BUT I can hit escape and it will un freeze. Does the same thing in plan view when I try to change a material.

Anyone have any clue at all?

Tim,
I've had this problem before. Two things to check.

-Check to see if you're in Alt Edit Mode

-long shot but here was an answer from Chief for a material problem I've had in the past:
Hi Patricia,

There is a north pointer or some light data that is causing problems. To fix this, delete the terrain perimeter then go to Edit, Delete Objects, All Floors, CAD. You can then re-create the terrain perimeter and it should show fine.
