finished side panels on cabinets
How do I show the cabinets at the ends with finished panels? I want to make a shaker style end just like the front of the cabinet.

I prefer to use a cabinet door converted to a millwork item, as it gives me a cleaner look that using a thin cabinet. In some ways it less trouble than using a cabinet, and it doesn't mess with your cabinet schedule.
Here's how to create the millwork symbol out of a cabinet door.
Place an upper cabinet in a new plan; asign it the door you would like to use. Open the cabinet DBX and under the material tab specify "opening (no material)" for the cabinet body. Also under the front tab, eliminate the hardware.
Take a full render overview of the cabinet.
Export to 3DS or DWG, and then bring it back in as a symbol. Specify a width (x) stretch plane of zero, and a height (z) stretch plane of half of the door heiaght.
Now you've got a millwork symbol of the door that will stretch nicely to fit the cabinet end.
It can also be used for a finished back with more options than you have in the cabinet DBX. It can also be used for wall panels, or appliance trim panels.
You can also use it to show a door or drawer in the open position.Last edited by billemery; 10-13-2008 at 07:08 PM.

Hi, Bill. I am a new Chief user, and am just finishing up a kitchen for the first time, and am in need of finished ends for both base and wall cabs.
I am in V. 10.08.a.
Trying to follow your steps, I am completely stuck on the one where the cabinet material is specified as "opening - no material" in order to delete it.
See my dbx view, attached. If I click on Library to go to materials, there is no spec for "no materials."
What is the right move, here?

Gene,
Looks like "insulation (air gap) won't work in V10, but there is another way.
Make a copy of the door you want to use and put it into "my cabinet doors". Open in and set the Y origin to -24". This allows the cabinet door to stand 24" off the cabinet.
Place an upper cabinet in a new plan and assign the modified door to the cabinet. Open the cabinet DBX and specify no shelves, and no hardware. In the front DBX set the separation and overlap values to zero; this eliminates more parts.
Now take a full vector overview, and use the surface delete tool to obliterate the cabinet parts. Rotate around, and up and down to make sure you've got everything but the door which is two feet out of the line of fire.
Now export to 3DS or Dwg and bring it back in as a symbol.
Remember to add stretch planes as noted earlier.

It's an easy process to develop your own cabinet doors; an advantage of this is that you can create the model for the door, and convert in into a cabinet door symbol and a millwork symbol from the same 3Ds file.
This thread gives the bare bones for developing your own cabinet doors.

Bill, thanks, but I am having trouble. I am in V 10.
New plan, not a thing drawn. Open library browser, go to Cabinet doors and drawers, choose Rectangular>Framed>Simple>FP-!-REC.
Cannot do anythign with the door unless there is a cabinet in the plan to assign it to.
So, place a wall cabinet in plan. Click on the library object that has been chosen, click on the cabinet, so now the cab has the door.
Nowhere did I see an option to set a Y origin.
I also right clicked on the door in the library to copy it, and then pasted it into "my cabinet doors," but taking it out of there yields the same results.
Guidance?

Bill,
I was interested on your process of creating a stand-alone cabinet door. I am using latest version of X1. I can’t find option “opening (no material) Maybe I’m doing something wrong can you show me where this option is?

you all are making this harder than it really is. insert a base cab on the floor plan, make it 1" deep, raise it 4 1/2" off the floor, delete the countertop & backsplash, make the height of the cabinet 34 1/2".... bam (thank you emeril) end panel for a cab, and you can adjust the panel to have one or two panels just like a normal cab. where as with the other ways, you'd have to insert another millwork door and mess around with the size. My way, its all done in ONE window all at one time. Very time efficient.

Gene,
You must place a cabinet in a new plan. The reason we have to go through this process is that you cannot place a cabinet door without placing a cabinet. We need to make the cabinet disappear.
Let's simplify a little. .
Let's create a new material for Version 10 called no material.
Open the library browser, and under "my materials" create a new material called "no material". Give it the following properties.
Follow the steps for X1 I've listed aboveLast edited by billemery; 10-14-2008 at 08:04 AM.

Cabinet Door
Bill,
I normally make a 1” thin cabinet and place it over the side of a cabinet. Once I read your posting I have tried but I come up with this. Can’t get a stand-alone door and it will only attach itself to the front as shown.

If I can ask a question on this thread...
I've done both scenarios creating finished cabinet ends as millwork and using opening (no material). When using opening (no material) I've created the symbol as a cabinet however I can't change the door facing to anything other than what I have originally created. It doesn't work like a cabinet where you choose different cab fronts. When opening my symbol cabinet DBX under "Front" tab, there are door and drawer styles I should be able to change from there but I can't.
Is there a way to make this happen?
could it be that when I change the cab depth to 1", it won't allow different door styles?
..... updated: the 1 inch depth wasn't the problem, it acts the same and won't let me change door fronts.
Thanks
