    Old Barn Lumber

I have a customer who wants me to tear down his old barn and use the lumber to build a 2 room "shanty" on the lake behind his house. He saw something similar in Mississippi that is rented out so people can see what it was like to live in the conditions that inspired the "blues". At any rate, does anyone have any suggestions for getting that old barn lumber look on my siding? I intend to do board and batten.

    Perfect

To steal a line from Master Obi Wan, "I've taken my first step to a larger world".

    Thanks, this was perfect.

Stain your siding with old used motor oil. It works better if it is a little warm ( leave a container in the sun). I resided part of a 150 year old barn with new white pine B&B stained this way and noone could really tell the difference after a very short while.Just don't let anyone know your doing it I don't think it's acceptable anywhere.

    - Have not heard of using motor oil - does it completely dry out and lose its smell?

I have seen some wood aged with a concrete wash that gave it a nice look. I am not sure of the method they used.

    nice ideas

nice ideas on getting ACTUAL siding to look old but I was actually referring to the renderings in Chief.

To "age" cedar fences I've used a baking soda and water mix. spray it on the boards and walk away.

Don't let the tree huggers see you using the motor oil...nice idea though.

You could always take a digital picture of the siding you like then convert the file and import into chief.

The smell does go away after a while, quicker on the sunny sides of the building.
