5.3 Meg file (slow to vector view)
This is the largest file Ive worked with so far. I hate to think about getting a new computer although mine is outdated. 2600 AMD 1 gig ram. Is there any way to speed up switching back and forth from 3-D to plan view? Zooming in and out is also obviously cumberson. thanks much

thanks Allen: The "start in low detail" option didn't make much of a change.minimal. I found that turning off all the cabinets layers made the most improvement in speed. I have 6 kitchens in this file with base, wall, countertops etc. That may account for part of the drag. It's doing quite a bit better now. turning off roofs planes and elec. helped some. thanks much. I certainly can't buy another computer yet.

Bob
Your welcome.
Plans started before the last update seem to be slower than new ones...........

Just as a general drafting question Bob, are these maybe blocked kitchens to use for different projects? I've seen it done before where you start with a base design and clients can option up to better ones.

Bob, I would consider adding more RAM if you could. It is pretty cheap right now. Good luck.

Does it matter if I buy 2700 or 4200 5300 6400 DDR RAM? I can't seem to find out what number or type I have existing on my computer. Thanks much.

You could always look up the serial # of your computer. That might show you the specs of your RAM.

I pulled the ram stick out. It says 1GB 128Mx64 DIMM PC 2100-DDR SDRAM. It's Old. There is one vacant pci slot. Do I need to buy ram the same as the existing one? thanks. Also do you think this will improve 3-d view speed and zooming in and out etc? 1.slightly 2. moderately 3.substantially 4.hardly at all.? Thanks as always. Bob L.

Do you have 2 or 3 slots? Mine has 3. The computer guys usually tell me that they run best in singles and pairs. Depending on the age, your computer might accept 2gb sticks. If not, run a pair of 1gb.

I suggest you run a program from this site:
http://www.crucial.com/
It will tell you exactly what RAM you have and what you need to upgrade and gives you an idea how much improvement it will make. It runs in IE or you can download a small executable.
Use with caution, however. I have 4Gig of Ram on Vista 32 bit and it suggested I go to 8. However, the 32 bit version of Vista does not recognize more 4, actually about 3.6Gig.Cliff "Hagar" Wilson

Cliff:
thanks, I've been wanting to upgrade my ram and never got around to determining what kind I needed.
