Full shed dormer cape
Ok for all of those up in the Northeast how do I make a full shed dormer cape ???? One that has a 12 pitch on the front and a 5 pitch on the back and runs the full lenth of the house. I've looked at old threads and videos can't find one. I have been experimenting too with no luck.......

Hi Dutch.
Cape with full dormer?
Piece of cake.
Make a ranch.
Put a 12/12 roof on it.
Add a second floor.
Go to second floor.
Put a roof on the Back side atop the second floor wall. 5/12 usually works. well.
Go to first floor.
Move your back side 12/12 pitch roof to the second floor.
Go to second floor.
Select the 12/12 pitch roof.
Cut the roof at the siding line on each gable end. This should give you a movable section in center.
Drag the center section of 12/12 roof to the siding layer of the Rear exterior wall.
Clean up by making sure your gable end overhangs are 12" (or your overhang amount) from the framing layer (10 3/4" from siding).
Next. Adjust your 5/12 pitch roof to meet the original ridge line where the two 12/12 pitches met.
DO NOT JOIN THE 5/12 and 12/12 or you'll have a Salt Box and NOT a full shed dormer Cape.

Glad you were able to figure it out. Just for reference that style is usually called a salt box, a cape is usually a story and a half (where the second floor is under the roof with the roof bearing on the first floor walls). A cape also typically has dog house dormers in the front and a shed dormer on the back.

Dutch.
I'm curious.
Did you use the Auto Dormer tool to create what you displayed or not?Alan Michaud

Al,
I don't think the Auto Dormer tool was used. The way I usually do a saltbox is draw the front roof plane on the first floor wall and check show one floor up then draw the rear roof plane on the second floor then join the roof planes and now you have saltbox. If it was a cape with a full shed dormer then I would have used the auto dormer tool.Ron Wentworth

Ron,
I understand.
In fact it's why I gave warning NOT to join roofs and lose the ridge position setup in the first steps of my procedure.
I was curious if Dutch used Auto Dormer to create the model he sent us an image of.Alan Michaud

Auto Dormer tool might be useful for "doghouse" dormer on the front of a cape (although i am still partial to drawing them manually) but it just seems like an extra step for a shed dormer, they are easy enough to draw.

I have a similar problem. I have an actual cape. 30' square with an 8 pitch. I need to add full shed dormers to the front and back. I have used chief mainly for floor plan design and kitchens up to this point so I'm a little behind the basics. I have the first floor built and the roof. I added a second floor. I'm having trouble adding the second floor roof to this. Do I have to manually build this somehow?? The auto dormer keeps asking for back walls to rest on but it doesn't need them nor do I want them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
