Covered Porch
Hi,
I am trying to change the roof slope on my covered porch, to 4:12. The house slope is 8:12. How can I break up the slope?
Thanks

Select railings/walls surrounding your porch, open the dbx, go to the roof tab and change the pitch there.

Does your porch take up the whole side of the house or just a portion of it? In cases like yours I just draw the roof planes for the house first (in your case at the 8 : 12 pitch), then open the roof dbx and change the roof pitch to the lower pitch (4 : 12) and draw the porch roof plane. You can then click on the house roof plane where the porch roof will intersect, then click on each side of the porch roof planes (you have to do this twice) to get the "X" point of intersection of the roof planes - this identifies where the porch roof and house roof will intersect. You can then select the porch roof plane's intersecting side (center handle) and pull it up and over to one or the other X's and, if your snaps are active, it should snap into position. You can then position the sides of the porch roof where you need them by dragging the side handles. You will need to open the porch side walls and under the roof tab put a check in the full gable box. If your porch is the same length as the house you could click on the lower edge of the house roof plane and then click on the join roof planes tool then the top edge of the porch roof plane (if they don't overlap) and I think they should snap together for you (or, drag the bottom of the house roof plane up some and then retry).

if you open up that roof plane.... lock the fascia height and adjust the pitch from there

Abe:
As Ric has noted ... there are other techniques that can be used. Regarding fascia heights, if your home's end walls aren't gable (hip roofs all around), then you will need to decide about the fascia height for the porch ... and the ceiling height of the porch etc. Is the house to be trussed and the porch over-framed? Several things to consider for the look you want.Curt Johnson

Curt:
Why area my intersection down so far, around the porch?
Thanks

Abe:
Are you asking me why your roof plane intersection line looks different than what I am showing on my "example"? If that is the case, the width of the house in my example is probably quite different than yours ... I was just trying to illustrate a couple of the steps I used. If you are asking something else, please clarify with a picture. If you haven't posted a picture before, Louis Fernandez has a short tutorial on how to do that on his website (www.lfcompany.com).Curt Johnson
