Allen yes that is what I am talking about with the cheek wall but also the face wall in my plans are set back from the outside wall of the house and need to show the windows along the front of the dormer on the floor that the room is on. How did you get your cheek walls to display properly?

Allen I have the dormer in the attic and have the wall sitting on the floor I have tried making the attic space behind the dormer but that does not seem to work for me. I am going to start with a new file and try this again from scratch to see if I can get it to work right.

Your cheek walls still display back beyond the headroom line at the break between the ceiling and the roof. When you lay out a floor plan and have partitions like in my first example the cheek walls break through the walls and display in rooms where they are not even present, they are above the line of the ceiling.
What do you mean setting the walls in the roof dbx?
You can see in this attachment what I mean about the cheek walls running back through closet walls, very confusing in my opinion.Last edited by JP Ware; 12-03-2007 at 09:00 AM.

Allen thanks, I realize most framers know what they are looking at, it is more for the homeowner, I would not drawthe cheek walls with a pencil like chief displays them I would draw them as i showed in my first example with dashed lines showing the cheeks and notes for headroom and dimension from the exterior wall.
Are you breaking the wall and using hatch patterns in the above example? I am sorry if I am being needy here but I just want to make sure I am fully understanding what you are trying to convey.JP Ware Design, LEED AP

Your welcome.
I did break the walls an added hatch fill.
I would draw it more like this and add notes...........

Back to dormer cheekwall issues... I have a shed dormer with a cheekwall that is broken so that the part that is above the ceiling is cut by the roof, the problem is I need a wall directly below it (interior 4") with a door in it. I cannot get the interior wall to sit under the dormer wall without wiping out the dormer wall. Then the model does not display properly from the outside of the house. The other issue I have with this particular layout is getting the walls to display properly in 3d from the inside, as the lower walls are Sheetrock both sides and the upper parts (above the roof) are exterior walls.
Any advice is appreciated.JP Ware Design, LEED AP

any ideas, I have tried different sequences of breaking the walls and trying to put the cheekwalls in the attic, to no avail...

Hi JP
Can you either post the plan or send it to me?
Only thing I can recommend without seeing it is to check the box=Lower wall type if split by butting roof..........
