    Cad

Have just completed first project in X1 ...very detailed & complex luxury residence... it took forever to produce the construction documents... lots of sections details & notes. Do most of you use Chief x1 to produce construction documents or are use exporting to other Cad?

Do you have pictures of what you did in Chief? We'd love to see it! I think I will be using the CA layout tools to make the construction docs!

I try to do everything in chief but when i draw a foundation on grade per engineer I use autocad much easier for 2d. drawings Chief in 2d cad needs to have a edit area and a undo function in cad . I feel chief is very poor and very behind with their cad side of the program! How did x1 treat you for construction drawings?

x1 is better than v10 but still requires lots of time consuming work arounds & clean up

Sometimes I feel like the only one that doesn't see all these "workarounds". What are you refering to?

100% X1 for all docs. The hardest part was to stop convincing myself it was too difficult and just learn how to do it. Every program has workarounds or shortcomings. Just dive in.

    Attached is all X1.

Nope - I agree. The "workarounds" are now just process, no?

    Rich,

Very nice quality on your plans. Thanks for posting them.

Did you spend much time on cleaning up the elevations?
They're really sharp as far as no wayward lines.

    Thanks. Val

    Rich,
    Very nice,
    Couple of questions.
Did you export view to CAD or are these sections and such direct views?
Did you auto detail or add joists etc by hand?
How much clean up of the 3D did you need to do?

I think these are the "workarounds" that require some experience which I am still trying to obtain.

    Thanks for sharing those plans.

You can absolutely use Chief for everything. No their not "workarounds" - but Chief does require more clicks for many things. Of course, I've been hitting the various multiples in acad for so long that the actual difference may be less than perceived.

Alright - just observed myself for a bit. Acad requires multiple keystrokes for things where Chief requires fewer. But - when acad requires it, it's a double or triple "enter", which an experienced user does with closed eyes - vs. Chief requiring mouse movement and mouse clicks. I find that the mouse movement adds more time than the clicks - 'cause it requires paying attention and aiming. If I could have a nickle for every time I miss my mark, say a few bad words and have to try again- I could at least buy some double decaf mocha italian grande thingies.

I wrote code in 1984 to make my Sinclair 100 - so I used to be a programmer! So I can say with authority how easy it is to program Chief features! ;-)

I do sometimes still use AutoCrud for 2D stuff only because I am too lazy to figure it out in Chief which I know will do what I want.

But more importantly I think I actually caught Wendy using a word incorrectly, "No their not workarounds", should be "they're not workarounds".

Now, I think I will go pick-knits with my wife and kids.

    Val,

Thank you. Truthfully, and this is no stretch, there is very little I do to my elevations with the exception of sending them to cad and map everything properly prior to print. I have an elevation layer set. All I usually have to do is send to cad, select everything, open the spec dbx and make sure the "color" and "lineweight" are by layer. Add boxes to dash the subgrade foundation, add notes and send to layout. That's really it.

    Thanks Rich,

So from what you described...your elevations are sent to CAD for some linework clean-up.
They look too good to have come right from a vector view. Really nice work.

I send active views to layout... and add all the CAD info right onto the camera shot.

Invariably the design revisions are on-going... even throughout the framing stages.
Having constant access to the saved camera avoids having to "save to CAD" for a second and third time if a window size or location changes.
