    Art Niche

    Good Afternoon,
I am trying to create an art niche. While searching other posts on the topic, I have determined that using polyline solids is the solution. I have an AutoCAD/3dMax background and would normally use a boolean subtraction to achieve this. I can't seem to make the polyline solid overlap a wall and even if I could I don't know how to subtract.

The other option I read about is using multiple walls and a doorway opening. Seems like that would take a lot longer than polyline. Thanks for your help.

Some folks don't take kindly to you out of town auto cadders coming into our forum with your Fancy Boo leon Subtractions, however I'm not one of them, welcome to the forum.
I think the doorway method is the best, but first you have to make the symbol, can you do this? Check this thread.

I think someone once made a niche symbol.

Thanks for the cool art niche block, but I have to make this just a plain rectangular recess. I have read through everything and still have one question: How do I make the doorway not go all the way through? I know that it must be a simple setting or something- just can't find it. Thanks again, you guys have been very helpful in my quest to learn this program.

I would put a polysolid on the back side of the wall.
    Your welcome..

    Which version ?

ver X1 does have a subtract tool, I have watched Dan Baumann create a niche but have not tried it myself. It looked fairly simple to do.

Here's one I made, it is 115 mm thick, and the niche has a depth of 100 mm, Prepare a room with walls 115 mm thick. The object should be imported as a doorway, units mm, it should rotated minus 90 deg. and given an offset of x=0, y=115, z=0 , The opening will need to be 1450 mm high. place it on a wall, then save to library. You can now use it in walls of all thickness including imperial.

This works with 2 poly solids, but not with a poly solid and an int. wall.

How about a door inserted in the wall with the bottom draged up in an elevation view?

    That's how I do it.

Well- I figured out the doorway in the wall dragged up in elevation. The problem is this creates an opening in the wall. I am still figuring out poly solids to fill in the hole left in the wall. It seems a lot easier to just export the file to 3dMAX and do a boolean subtraction. This program is so good at performing some operations and not so good for others. This is one of them.
