Question
What can be done differently in ACad than in Chief once these guys receive the DWG's. They'll still be messing with all the layers to get them the way they want,,, so why not just do it in chief.

Yeah I'm curious too Ray. It just seems that maybe a little knowledge of ACAD may allow us to apply a couple of consistent tweaks that would allow for better importing. Of course it could end in a lot of effort and simply back to the same old problems as you suggest. I think that is why I am asking for your guys' valuable experience.

get a sample and post and you will get much better assistance...ie the acad lt routine still may not work if the creator is using a land plugin to create the file..
i have tcad and acad as well as chief and could look at it for you to provide a better, more accurate solution that is not based on guesses as to what the file consists of, the format of it, etc...Tim O'Donnell

Tim,
I am sending myself a note from my home PC to my office PC as a reminder and will post the file on Monday.
Thanks

Larry,
your attachment has xrefs in it, did you get the xrefs when it was sent to you?
you need to get the BORDERS-IRRIG.DWG
& IIC-BASE.DWG
THIS IS ALL THAT WAS IN THAT FILELast edited by slatta; 12-11-2006 at 10:46 AM.

Larry, basically xrefs are just drawings, irrigation drawing is like chiefs layouts and the other 2 drawings are the working drawings like chiefs .plan
irrigation has been set up to look for those two in a certain place just like chiefs layout
edit, works fine bringing it in in acad lt, the chief import needs substancial work to get it the way it is supposed to be, the square blocks are attributed so won't help to explode it and the line sizes are missing by the sprinkler heads.
let me know what I can do to help if anything..Last edited by slatta; 12-11-2006 at 11:35 AM.

yes..it is missing the xref files that Neal alludes to...they are on the landscape creator's system at F:PROJECTS\BORDES-APTS\IRRIG\BORDES-IRRIG.dwg & F:PROJECTS\BORDES-APTS\ORIG\IIC-BASE.dwg

the irrigation file is basically the acad equivalent of a layout sheet..and as such the xref files are the plan file viewports.....the notes and some of the editing were done in this layout sheet.....so the drawing in the irrigation file is in paper scale(layout in chief) and the xref are model scale(plan view in chief)
don't import the irrigation dwg file into a chief plan view, but rather the two xref ones individually (BORDERS-IRRIG.DWG & IIC-BASE.dwg)...import only cad blocks if used..map them to their original layers and import the layer attributes...do not do anything to the first import (if you want to block it when it is still selected at import you can do that)...immediately import the second one and it will come in correctly located on top of the first one
here i have imported the irrigation file into a CAD detail (after i removed the xref) and blocked the editing and added it to the plan view with the xref files, and resized it to fit the scale of the plan drawing (resize factor is 120 as the scale of the layout is 1"=10')...the notes and title block could also be put on a 24x36 layout sheet as that is what it fits...then plan views sent to a layout to match the original acad setup
many of the line wts are set to 0 but i imported them on their own layers so you can set the layer line wts as you desire
it would probably be preferable if the landscape guy would simply send you the model space plans and not paper space ones with xref file links...and if he could put his notes on them there as well...
the attached zip has the three files imported into a single chief10 plan (the irrigation file is in a CAD detail)Last edited by Tim O'Donnell; 02-02-2008 at 06:15 AM.
