Well said. It is a question of trial and error. I tried the same settings with a darker background, and the increased contrast requires (of course) a change of material settings.

Thanks again to both you and Paul for all the comparisons. At least now I feel like I could get something close enough for my purposes pretty quickly.

It's kind of hard to balance the look 'cause the conical shape of the hopper doesn't allow as much play (highlights/reflections) as a shapely glass. I think my experience (thanks to Paul and Anders) indicates a whole bunch of interesting relationships:
    John:

That is exactly what I started to discover. I had settings that were working great for windows in cars and buildings for exterior views but when I used the same material for a wine glass it looked...well like yours.

I added a different shape and it look better but the shadows made things look a bit strange. As Anders indicated the lighting and background materials (I would add 'shadows') make a big difference as well. I have attached an image of difficult background colors and lighting (shadows). I think of it as my 'What not to do' file for raytrace views of glass objects.

The vase and the bottle on the right are the same material. The others had different colors and different but similar settings. Notice that the cone of the wine glass never, ever, looks good. John, I wonder if adding a very slight bend to the cone would help?

Good point about the curve, Larry. I might try that, but I was pretty happy with the look of the hopper. Actually, I find its look to be much more convincing than any of the bottles and glasses you have just posted (of course, you said this is a not-to-do example). However, it does seem a bit like a satin finish with the way I compromised. Likewise, there are some anomalies in the cylindrical glass of the doser.

I would also say that the martini/wine glasses in your image are single-sided, and would benefit from actually having thickness and a lip to create a highlight. I'll have to play with glasses and bottles a bit this weekend.

    I'll keep you posted,

    John,

OF course you have to empty them first!

interesting posts guys, but WAY too time consuming to make money.
I do appreciate the pointers though. Great stuff as usual!

Thanks Lars, for the link to see your glass pics and settings. Good stuff. Its apparent that you've spent some time with it. Thanks for passing along what you've discovered.

I still can't figure out why I can see some attachments and not others though. I'm using Firefox.... maybe I'll try Explorer...............................Ah, Yes!! that's it!! I must need to download something from Firefox.

    Sorry about all this prattling.

    Thumbs up Very Nice Alan!

What color glass did you use? Also, it appears you may have made the wine glass. Did you?

In atrL they have special glass and water textures.. all you need to do is just apply them..... and adjust the colors...

yes, i have the wine glass symbol... will upload to the 'one symbol a day'... later.

    Thumbs up Hey Chiefer!

Very nice job. Looks like we are getting this down to a science. Can you post your settings?

Also, have you tried to apply your settings to a shower door or a room window? Thats a challenge also.
