Int/Ext wall materials - beware the spray can!

I did some material changes to some interior walls using the eye dropper/spray can. I subsequently discovered that some of the "paint" got on the outside walls, so to speak. In more than one location, the exterior of an attic wall took on the material that I applied to the interior. If I use the eye dropper/spray can to change the exterior wall material back to the correct material then I find that the interior of that room also changes to the exterior material. If I use the room specification box to change the material for the room then that same material appears on the exterior attic wall (but not the exterior room walls on that floor). I also looked at the materials definition in that specific attic wall but they are shown correctly for the exterior (shingles) - even though the display is a paint color (olive).

I've learned to avoid using the spray can but can anyone help me fix this material problem? How can I get shingles back on the exterior without having them also appear on the interior of this wall?

    Thanks,

I avoid it big-time because it's too easy to mess up the plan and it takes a while to fix it.

Well I've had that problem too, on a similar style house even.

For all rooms, set the wall materials to 'Use Default'. Then use the wall coverings tool in each wall's specification or a polyline solid to cover up the rest.

It is good practice not to use the material painter on walls. This tool affects the room definition rather than the wall material. It is a common problem.

To fix this open the room specification. The exterior room specification can be accessed by clicking just outside the exterior wall.

Next change the wall material back to use default.

If you want to change the wall material do so in the wall dialog or better yet create a new wall type and change the material in the wall type.

    Dan,
One of our office 'commandments' is to not use the material painter spray can on walls.
However, it happens once-in-a-while, though nobody will own up to it. (It was probably me!)
We can never get the wall to go back to the default material once it has been changed w/ the 'sprayer'. We have to select the actual material defined in the wall def dbx from the list of plan materials.

I have never seen a case where you could not change the room material to 'use defaults' and have the wall material come back. If you have one send it to me and I will look at it.

That is a good commandment Jim! It has always been one of mine so to speak and that is written in stone big-time.

    Dan,
Are we talking about the same thing?
I'm referring to the material defintions of the wall, not default room materials.
