This computer is about 15 months old. Should I or could I update to a newer version? Just spent half a day removing the old and installing new antivirus and antispyware programs and now am running slow....aaagh!

Norton? true to form if so...it is garbage ...***** up far too many of a systems resources...

if you haven't done so in those 15 months it is time to update your video driver...nvidia releases new drivers nearly every month...I just downloaded and installed nvidia's ltest driver..v84.21

Good idea, especially with the card you have Tim. I have the same card and the 81.98 drivers were buggy with this card. You're probably not a gamer or you would have noticed--it would hang after about 5 minutes in any Direct3D game. OpenGL worked fine however.

BTW, the GeForce 7800 GS is a great AGP card, recommend it for anyone not willing to get PCI express yet. Make sure your power supply has at least 20 amps on the +12v (look at the label on the side of the ps).

At this point there is probably no reason to update unless you are seeing problems. It may be possible to update your video card drivers to get OpenGL 2.0, but that will offer no benefit in the current release of Chief over what you already have.

We're interested in seeing what features of OpenGL we can feasibly take advantage of in the future.

It's usually as simple as finding out what video card you have (if you don't know, the documentation that came with your computer should tell you) and then going to the manufacturer's website and then downloaded and installing the latest driver.

A lot of video cards now come with a control panel that will tell you what version of their driver you're running.

It's usually a simple process, but if you're unsure, you may get somebody else to do it. If the video card stops working on your machine, it's hard to see what you're doing.

    Kieth:
    Thank you.
I suppose I should have started another thread asking this question.
I'll try and figure out what I've got and see if I can find their web pages for updates.

right click on the my computer icon>properties (or control panel>system), then the hardware tab, click device manager...expand the tree for display adapters...dbl click on the video card that is listed...your video card is in the titlebar at the top of this dbx...then click the driver tab...third line down is the driver version,

    Thanks Tim.
Now that I know what version I have, should I check for a newer one?
    Or just hit update driver?
