Put a room above the stairs with a room definition of "Open Below". Not sure if this applies to v10 but you will have to put a wall connecting to an exterior wall to make it work (that meets on one of the walls for the "open below" room). One wall has to touch an exterior wall. If you don't want to see the wall on the second floor, make it invisible. See if that solves your problem.

    Tommy:

Can it touch an interior wall that touches an exterior wall eventually ? I thought I heard that it just couldn't be an "island" ?

that will work...as long as there is an eventual link to an exterior wall

Is this a bug or what?
I tried placing the auto stairwell within a room on the second floor that was not connected to the exterior walls. Yep, the floor covered the stairwell until I connected a wall of the room to one of the exterior walls.

Then you could see the hole in the stairwell in an overview as per usual......but not the stairs as per usual.

The auto stairwell places an invisible line to the next? wall by itself, which is great, but still doesn't completely resolve the issue in this particular situation.....does it?

And what does 'Shir' mean by suddenly lose the stairs? Please clarify 'Shir'.

    Thanks

    Paul

P.S. Good tips Tommy, Lew & Tim!

Is this a bug or what?

    Paul:

It's a design "feature" that should be eliminated, as it causes this kind of confusion and frustration. It's not inutitive to have this kind of "requirement".

For CA, it's a case of "the ankle bone is connected to the shin bone", "the shin bone is connected to the knee bone" .....

As far as I can remember (version8), you have always had to add a wall to the "open below" room that connects to an exterior wall. Once you've done stairs many times where your "open below" room is in the middle of the room, it gets second nature to do it because you should know how the program works by that time. I can see confusion and frustration for people who are learning how to do this for the first time, but as with anything, once you know how to do it, the confusion and frustration should go away. Right??

    Precisely !!!

    Why have these little "gottcha's"

Yes, once you know the secret mumbo jumbo it may not be confusing. but's it's still a frustrating "extra" step that has to be remembered.

    It's just not "user-friendly".

But Tommy, it's a bit like a booby trap. Ver 10 automatically places an invisible wall when you use the auto stairwell tool. Even I was fooled into thinking everything would then be sweet. Low and behold, you still have to add more walls/invisible walls to connect to the exterior walls if they don't already.
I hope ART eventually finds a way around this one. It's not the biggest issue in town......but.

    Hey Lew

Maybe 'bug' was the wrong word to use......'design feature' is much more user friendly! Good one.

Having been a programmer for 28+ years I have seen the industry call many things a "design feature" instead of a "bug".

    Classic joke:

How many Microsoft engineers does it take to change a light bulb ?

Answer: 50, and if they can't get it done, they just declare darkness to be the new "standard".

If you are looking from an overview, that is normal for Chief. It's not you.

    Sorry,

I'm got gatting any notification emails on these posts. Very frustrated. Tim might be right (probably is). I'll check into it. I have always drawn a wall directly to an exterior wall from my "open below" room and made it invisible.
