Referenced files no longer in layout
EVERY time I open a layout there are files that Chief claims it cannot find,
"The file XXXX.xxx referenced from your plan or layout could not be found in any of the standard search locations. Do you want to look for the file?"
Then we get a "missing file" notation pointing to more files that cannot be found.
There seems to be a link from the layout to files that were previously in the layout and Chief looks for those files every time. These files DO NOT exist any longer in the layout but I can't seem to break these mysterious links?
Any help or advice?
Thanks

Larry,
Do you have all of the plan files that are used in the layout in the same folder?
Are you the only person that has worked on this plan?
Look in the layout for an empty view port and delete it.Last edited by louis; 02-15-2006 at 11:00 AM.

Are empty view ports like boxes with nothing in them? Or do they need to be selected before they become visible and therefore deleted?
I've gone through each layout page, even blanks through page 50, and shift selected the blank areas and no visible, empty viewports can be found.
I've checked the tools/layout/layout files and nothing unusual shows.
I have a feeling that the original plan file that chief is still looking for was placed in the layout then 'saved as' under another file or plan name. Will this keep the link to the original file even though it has been 'saved as' under another name?
I've been dealing with this problem for a VERY long time, just never understood it, and apparently still don't. There is a fundamental way of doing things within Chief that I do not understand which continually creates these broken links - in almost every layout file I have ever created.
Still stumped.

Could it be something you did when you set up titleblock on page 0?

Also baffled
Larry, I am having the same problem with the "missing" links (the program always opens the right directory for me to choose them from though... wierd), I have also looked for ways to break these links and have not found one.

Send the layout to support@chiefarchitect.com and put "attn. Dan" in the subject line and I will take a look at it for you.

Thnaks for the reply Larry
Yeah Larry I suspect that is where the problem might be, BUT I don't know how to specifically locate the problem. One file is a bitmap that I cannot locate nor is it referenced in the layout files. Another is a .jpg file and another is a plan file. The names are clear but their locations, if still referenced in Chief, remains a mystery.

Larry,
The file is referenced in an unused CAD block. If you purge the CAD blocks you will no longer get the error.Dan Park,

Will probably give up trying to fix it and live with it like I have for the past years of Chief usage, as I don't have time to chase it down, nor do I understand how these links are created in the first place. The purpose of Government is to control the common resources, not the common man.
