Standard top of window?

As one of those carpenters I try to go by the pictures.Most of the time they are bigger windows and the doors have transoms on top..
It's easier if you can use a single header=2x12 instead of a 2x10 for 8'..
If normal windows are used,they look better from eye view at the 8' wall height.
