Allen,
Why don't you tell Lew how I did that!

Louis
I think you turned everything on in layers that was needed for the view and then just deleted surfaces.
That's how I did it before.

Allen,
You win the prize. I'm not sure what the prize is but you have won it.

OK, that's good for presentation of the new addition.
But what about doing a framing plan for going to permit or to do the CD'S for the framers an dthe cross-sections etc.
This is where I "think" there is a potential flaw in Chief.
Chief may need a "build group" id like it already has for "roof group". Chief would then build according to the order of the "build id" and it would be as tho it was built over time the way it's done in real life ?

you can do this w/o deleting surfaces or anything like that...there are several ways to not have the existing building frame or show on the material list.
use of layers for the existing walls, windows, doors and the M(material designation) setting...
the material used in the wall layer definition can be used...used with..
...the option to use the wall framing layer material when building the framing
the option in the wall dbx to 'retain wall framing'(check this prior to building framing and no framing will be generated in those walls...
setting the 3d framing layer set to include the existing walls in 3d...

Tim:
That's great to know Chief can do it, now I just need to practice
Based on my prior thread it was indicated that Chief couldn't do it.
Thanks

Tim, when you say set up layers for exting walls, doors, windows ext.... Are you saying make up walls with just exterior look of new addition and place on seperate layer some way? Confused on setting up layers for pre- exiting. Can you set up blank layer some way and then use the normal walls and doors ext.. for the pre-exiting and then swich to new layer to draw addition with same walls and windows, doors ext..? any help would be appreciated

David,
One way to do this is to have an existing wall type that has something other than framing for the main layer (example air gap). Then have another wall type for new walls and have framing for the main layer.

thanks Louis for getting back with Me, would I use air gap for all layers on the exiting, like for the siding as well to keep it from figuring in the materials? how would I get it to look like siding with out actually using siding?

David,
That is one approach you could take. Make a copy of the siding material and just keep the texture so it looks like siding in render modes but reports to the materials list as air.

I'd like the new X-BOX 360 for my prize
This has been driving me nuts, doing the auto way.Every time I was getting a gambrel roof, was going for a 10 pitch.
If you dont go by the default 6 pitch(even though I changed it to 10)I had to check the upper pitch and change that in the wall that was broke for the knee wall.
Still having proplems with the cheek wall not building all the time if I do it manualy..

Once I get somthing in my head I have to do it.
The ledger on existing roof
I would rather have rafters or ridge beams adjustable so they follow the roof instead of just 90 degrees.

Louis , I created pre-exiting no material wall and created a room and then run material list, it steal showed floor and ceiling material?? did not show any thing for the walls. Mind you that I am drawing this in a new layer that I called "pre-existing wall" that I have un-checked all the "M"in. Am I any where close too what you would do or what Tim sugested? All help well appreciated
