    Dan,

What am I doing wrong? I know that is an open ended question but, even on much smaller renderings my times are was more than yours.

For example: I am in the middle of a raytrace in ChiefPOV 3.5. The size is about 1000x750 give or take. Medium Radiosity, High AA. I know here is the kicker - 9 Lights. This one started last night at 11:00 PM. It has 8.5 Hours in it and has 3:30 Left to go. But I know that by the time it is done it will take another hour or so. So, it will have taken 13 hours to complete.

I know the 9 lights is the big issue. I do that to make the house look real. Otherwise, My windows are blacked out as if there were no lights on in the house.

I am running the same rendering on a different PC at the same time with No Radiosity, High AA. Thant one will take a total of 11 Hours to complete - that PC is a little Slower.

    My "better" PC is:
    P4 2.83 GHZ - No HT
    1 Gig RAM
    XP PRO
    CA 10.06A

    Any thoughts that might help?

    Attached is a sample rendering

    Thanks,

    Dan,
Try changing the default texture for your windows. You can change the glass color, dial down or increase the transparency of the windows, or add greater reflection values and thereby get about any effect you want in the windows other than black. Then you can do that same rendering with just the sun. You are correct. It is the lights that are killing you, but you have greater control over your glass characteristics than you are excercising. Hope that helps. Dan

    attenuation!

attenuation on those lights should help.

they should not compete with the sun at all, unless you want a night shot.

then you won't calculate the shadows from inside clear out into the yard

even halogen lights are not THAT intense

The distance your light travels will add greatly to the amount of time to raytrace. there is a fallout value where the raytracing 'gives up' and goes on to the next task.

attenuation will force this fallout value quicker.

    Dan,

Thanks for the help. I will give that a try after I finish this group of renderings - I am on the home strech and need for these to be consistant with the project I am working on. I have managed to get my physical size down to a minimum to keep the renderings small enough so that they do not take so long. I also have 3 PC's working for me. That helps too ...

    Also, thanks for the complement.

When I walk through a real neighborhood in the daytime rarely are there lights on inside the house. If there are, there is usually only one or two. If your house has an unusually dark area, such as a deep front porch, you might want to turn on one light near that area, otherwise you don't need any.

    Dean,

Thanks for the advice. I will experiment with that.

I do like the lights to be on, But I do not like how intense that they are. This becomes more evident when there are 2 lights on a porch.

I have tried to turn down the intensity at times and that seems to help.

    Thanks again,

Just about 90 hours to finish the render. I will definitely experiment with some of the info provided in this thread before I do another large render.
