    ADA standard for bathroom area?

Somewhere I thought I remembered that the ADA requirement for clear space for a wheelchair to turn around in a bathroom was about 54". I found an ADA website with hundreds of stats, but couldn't find that one. Anyone know that one off hand?

    Thanks,

There are a zillion details on line that you can look at. Try the "Florida building code on line" there is a n accessibility code chapter 11 that has a lot of details.

Mike is correct @ 60". Here is the UN site. It may be of interest.

Thanks to all. Acording to the UN site, 1.5 meters, which converts to 4'-11 1/16". Loks like 60" to me.

The NKBA lists all the ADA requirements relative to residential building. It's 60" round, but different if the chair is able to make a K turn. I can look it up if you need it.

Aright Adam, now you got me. Whats a "K" turn? Is it AKA 3-point-turn?

This will be in a residential bathroom, and if I make it 60" clear inbetween the front of the stool/vanity to the door that gives about a 7'4" bathroom dimension. That seems to me way big, if we are trying to limit total square footage, but I don't want to short anyone.

    Thanks,

Yep, 3 point turn. Must be a term from New Jersey when I got my drivers license eons ago. I'll see if I can dig out the NKBA binders and find that spec.

    ADA Design Standards

The attachment is a 3-page PDF I scanned from NKBA's Bathroom Industry Technical Manual #4: Bathroom Planning Standards and Safety Criteria. I can't guarantee that it's precisely from the ADA, but if not it probably exceeds it. As you will see, the dimensions change depending on how high above the floor you measure. Also, a T-turn is acceptable in certain situations. I hope I don't get in trouble for disseminating this!

    Allen,

If you email me, I will send you a CA plan file that has ADA cad details. It seems to be the same as other info you've been told here. It's too large a file to post here. Maybe it would help. It would be a zip file.

    Email me at: tommybps@mail.ev1.net

Here's the last of the three pages I posted for those who just want to see the T-turn option.
