Post and Beam Issues

I've two questions.

1. When specifying a railing, I'm using "Post to Beam." How can I change the thickness (height) of the beam? I've tried in framing defaults>Beam Initial Values, which apparently is the wrong place. I know this is basic, but I'm unclear on where to make the change.

2. In the drawing below, there's a post showing that shouldn't be there. "No Halfpost" is checked. I assume it has something to do with how the railing has joined the adjacent wall, but they appear connected. I know I can draw the posts, but I want to get this railing thing down. Thanks for any help.

I just tryed it.You can make every thing wider by wall type,5 1/2 rather than 3 1/2.
I did not get the post at wall with no half post check,maybe try hitting F12 to rebuild.
How do you get the post to show in plan view?It must be something simple.

My way of learning,try and do the questions on here.
I adjusted the beam by using a beam from framing.Did just a rail first,placed beam over it,Ctrl/drag.then resized,got the hight right,then post to beam,might be a shorter way to get there,

Allen,

On the newels and balusters tab there is a check box to "draw newels and balusters" in plan view. Uncheck default, then click draw newels and balusters. ( my wording may not be exact.) This only works for railings.

Is there a way to just show posts and not spindles?

Thanks for your input. I know I can add a beam; I'm trying to adjust the beam that's automatically put there when the railing is installed.

As for the post that won't go away, still haven't figured that out either. I've tried rebuilding, and reconnecting too.

Put the beam in first,adjust the size and hight,put it on it's own layer(Beams or what ever)then draw the deck rail through it ,check post to beam,try no half rail.

OIC. Still, I wonder if there's a way to adjust the beam the program automatically inserts. Do you know where the control is for that? Does anyone? Is there one?

just a guess but could the spacing of your post have one falling right there?.Try spacing them father apart.
That's all I have on the beam.

This makes me wonder. I doubt I'm the only one who's had these problems. Either I'm very unpopular, which considering my occasional abrasiveness is not unlikely, or there really are no answers! I lean towards the former.

I have spent days trying to change the height of that beam..
I played around with manually drawn beams for a while but in the end the I found that a 3D molding polyline was the best cure.
If you find out how to change that beam, please tell me.

There is no way to adjust the beam only, the "post to beam" feature is very limited at this point. If you need something different you will have to use a work around like Allen suggested. As far as the post that won't go away, just check no half post in the railing tab, if this doesn't work, try pulling the railing further into the wall or you may have to redraw that section of railing, also try the offset feature in the newels and balusters tab or play around with the spacing.

Allen, there is no way to show just the newels or just the balusters with that feature

Ron thanks. Dragging the railing into the wall was a good idea. Still, when I rebuild walls/ceilings it happens again.

I'm glad to know others have tried the beam thing!
