    Night,

    Is it possible to export a Chief Architect-made house to Lightwave to be rendered?

    Hi Michael

    I have no idea if you can do that, have not tried it, but I guess it's like many other 3D programs that you have to apply the textures again and the lighting is probably not going to work so you have the add new lighting points. But one thing that is better in many 3D Softwares is the lighting, how it works and how you can control it. In 3D studio max you have 8 different kinds of lights sources and the control you have over each is much great/better than in Chief.
    I have only tried to export a plan from chief in to 3DS max once and it was WAY to much work to make it work in there, so I guess the best is to export to a freestanding Raytrace engine like Accurender, Blender, Pov-Ray, RenderPark, VirtuaLight, Brazil Rendering System, NuGraf Rendering System or any other rendering engine out there. You can find a lot of them on this page.

    Now I have to work on the last part of my tutorial, soon finished

    Hm. You didn't mention Artlantis, which we've talked about on another thread. How does it compare to Max? And, correct me if I'm wrong, but you said Artlantis does work with Chief? If so, how does that work?

    Hi again Michael.

    I just forgot that one, there are so many rendering engines out there.

    Hm. You didn't mention Artlantis, which we've talked about on another thread. How does it compare to Max? And, correct me if I'm wrong, but you said Artlantis does work with Chief? If so, how does that work?
    I said???? I think you mean Alan Chang said. He uses Artlantis and what I understand it works very well together with Chief. I have not tried it my self, but if Alan says it works then it does, he really knows what he's doing. If you have questions about it, I bet he can help you with it.

    I will try again to export from chief to 3D Studio Max and make a Pov-Ray, so let’s see what the result will be, I know one thing for sure it will be MUCH, MUCH faster to make a picture.

    Time to go to bed now, getting late.

    Take care.

    Oh, quite right. Sorry. So many new people to keep track of. Alan said...

    Thanks for the info.

    Hm. Interesting. Alan--I'm curious. If I sent you my entire plan for the house I'm working on, would you do one render of any room you choose and let me know how long it takes? Of course, you don't have to. I'm just curious. Also, what are the specs on your computer? I'm using a Dell laptop with a 2.2GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and an onboard video chip.

    Wow. I'm impressed. What did you differently in the second render?

    The second images comes with radiosity..

    I forget to mention... for the first image, it only takes a total time of less then 10 minutes to prepare the model ( apply lights and textures) and render..( after it was exported from chief ) while the second image takes around 12 minutes.

    I like Rhino a lot myself, I find it very easy to use. Then again, I have nothing whatsoever to compare it with. My husband's tried a few other things and still likes nurbs modeling (Rhino) better. It depends on what you want to do at any time, I guess.

    I hope you got things figured out.

    Just for fun I thought this would be a good challenge for POV-Ray's constructive solid geometry features.

    I also tried to use all the essential features to give a fair (not perfect) representation of this situation.

    The sink bowl is a piece of a superquadratic elipsoid: (in POV-Ray language)

    difference {

    superellipsoid { //outer surface
    <.25, // east-west exponent (0.0 ... 1.0) superquadric ellipsoid
    1> // north-south exponent (0.0 ... 1.0)
    rotate <90,0,0>
    scale 10
    translate <0,10,0>}

    cylinder { //for drain hole
    <0,0,0>, <0,3,0>, .75}

    superellipsoid { //inner surface
    <.25, // east-west exponent (0.0 ... 1.0)
    1> // north-south exponent (0.0 ... 1.0)
    rotate <90,0,0>
    scale 9.5
    translate <0,10,0>}

    // create a box that cuts the top of the sink away
    box {
    <-1, -1, -1> // one corner position <X1 Y1 Z1>
    < 1, 1, 1> // other corner position <X2 Y2 Z2>
    rotate <0,0,0>
    scale 10
    translate <0,15,0>
    }

    material {
    texture {
    pigment { color rgbf <0.77, .95, 0.94, 0.95> }
    finish {
    specular 0.6
    roughness 0.005
    ambient 0
    diffuse 0.15
    //brilliance 1
    reflection {
    0.2, 1.0
    fresnel on
    }
    conserve_energy
    } }

    interior {
    ior 1.21 // index of refraction
    //dispersion 1.01 // needs a color_map in the light source
    //dispersion_samples 2 // accuracy of calculation (2..100) [7]
    caustics .75 // faked caustics (0..1)
    fade_power 1001 // values larger than 1000 give realistic exponential attenuation
    fade_distance 3 // distance where light reaches half intensity
    fade_color <0.77, .95, 0.84>
    }

    }// photon block for an object
    photons{
    target 1.0 // spacing multiplier for photons hitting the object
    refraction on
    reflection off
    collect off // ignore photons
    //pass_through // do not influence photons
    }
    translate <0,36,0>} //move sink to counter height

    There are many ways to present this idea and I feel all shown here would do quite well to get the point across

    Yeah, I heard there was a use for all that math stuff. Now I know what it is.
