Firewall Detail

Just wondering if anyone might have a little insight to offer on this...

Does anyone have details or info on firewall design for combustible construction buildings.
The reason I am asking is it seems that the only acceptable detail around here (Nova Scotia, Canada)is to build a full masonry wall (which extends through the roof) to divide one section of a building from the other. To say this looks horrible is an understatement.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
