Does the V10 traning video 623 help at all? Not as fancy as Tim's technique but at least it shows how to see what is under the stairs.

The advantage of using Tim's linetype is that the line appears solid even though it is segmented.

as Bill indicated it worked for hi, it must be in the zip...it is from v10...it might not work in an earlier version?
