Note that 9.5 and v10 can run on the same computer.

That sounds like the most reasonable answer to backwards compatibility. Ain't nothin' more compatible than the original version, right? Question is (and this one's been a rough one) does the license agreement allow us to do that?

As far as I know, you can have both programs on a computer but you can only use one at a time, or in other words, you will not be able to open plans from both programs at the same time on a single computer that has both programs loaded.

It may be possible, if both dongles can be active at the same time then fire up one version then hold ctrl key before firing up 2nd version.

This method allows 2+ copies of the same version to run so it may work with different versions.

I just ordered ver 10 so I can't try this out yet.
