When i raytrace a render image (exterior view) no matter how much i tweak the controls, like turning down direct sun and turning up diffuse sun, the shadows always come out so dark that it detracts frm the quality of the image
Have you tried using low or medium radiosity? this will allow some diffused light to fill in those shaded areas and bring out the detail there.
Increasing the sunlight power and increasing the diffuse sunlight power will also help.
You can also increase the diffuse setting on the materials that are in the shadows and the terrain material as well. Somewhere around medium could make those shade areas react more to the radiosity
lighting effects.
One thing to try -- turn DOWN the sun a little bit and then once the image is raytraced, use File->Image Adjustment to brighten things up.
Most of our sample raytraces here in-house were fairly close to real-world photographic comparisms. Occasionally you may need to manually insert a dim light into the shaded area to brighten things up.
